#13: Naysayer Practice – Technology Argument

As many psychologists would say, social media has ruined the mental health of its users. Many of these scientists believe that social media is an avenue for teens to feel left out of the events and activities that others are participating in. These events often trigger moments of loneliness and self question. An observer may question why they were not invited to a particular gathering or why they were purposely left out, which can take a toll on his or her’s self confidence and self-image. Yes these feelings can arise. However, according to Alexandra Samuel, the author of “Plug In Better”, we must accept the idea that we cannot be at every social event or outing. She describes these lonely feelings as “FOMO”, or the “fear of missing out” (3). A way we can combat FOMO is to understand that we will not be invited to everything and that it is okay if our peers spend time together without us.
